During Pool season we locate Long Island Pool Leaks everyday. From Liner Leak Repair to Testing & Finding Under the Ground Pipe Leaks
Big to small we have seen it all, as far as Pool Leaks go.
Pool Leak Detection is our only Job from covering East Nassau to West Suffolk Counties for central Long Island.
How are we a little annoying:
Some pool owners find we have too many questions before we start a job/give an estimate:
Questions like wanting to know precisely what are you losing per day with respect to inches and is it obvious that the water loss is more with pump running. Did the water level settle at a particular area in the pool - for example did it settle right below the skimmers.
We ask these annoying questions because we HATE looking for a leak that not where we are testing - for example performing an unneeded pressure test or unneeded dive is a waste of our time and a waste of your money. SO MOST TIME AFTER YOUR TESTING RESULTS WE KNOW WHICH DIRECTION TO GO - in terms of testing - unfortunately testing occassionlly confuses us a little more. LOL
Some Pool Companies just start with a pressure test or dive, and if they find nothing wrong, they just perform the other. We can do that too if you prefer. Again we prefer not to perform unneeded services.
Some other pool companies on occasion have re-piped pools only to find it was a liner Leak or vice versa. We try really hard not to make those type of errors especially with other people's money.
A scuba Diver does what?
Step 1 - we scuba dive & examine every inch of the liner & interior of the pool
Step 2 - We dye test those questionable areas to confirm any Leakage
Step 3 - Once all the Leaks are located, we perform the needed repairs underwater, without draining your pool. Whether the Vinyl pool needs punctures patched, sealer or epoxy to stop a light Leak or a Gunite pool that has minor cracks that need repair with epoxy, we will stop the Leak.
For Liner Leaks we find them & Fix them
We patch liners underwater - draining your pool is not necessary.
Leaks behind lights or at gaskets of Vinyl Liners are repaired with a sealer or epoxy that can setup underwater - they were actually made for that purpose.
A Pressure is the start of the pipe Leak Detection Process:
The pressure test will tell us what line is Leaking or broken/bad/has the Leak. After we determine what line has a leak you have at least 3 options:
1) Replace the pipe entirely
2) Locate the pipe Leak (WHAT WE DO WELL) & get it repaired (by your pool co.)
3) Live with the Leak & re-pipe perhaps when you get a new patio.
Moving forward with an accurate Leak Detection we can electronically / acoustically locate it usually within a very small area. Once the pipe Leak is located your pool company can do the repair. Usually that is the end of the problem. Occasionally you might still be Leaking (have a second Leak) and we come back for a minimal charge to find it
Pool Plumbing Pipes can fail for a number of reasons:
Tree roots wrap around pipes and can strangle/move it and it develops a Leak.
Ground settlement that could be the result of poor compaction of the dirt or bad soil (containing construction debris or earth matter which settles over time) at the pools original construction.
Pipes failing at joints due to lack of/or no glue during initial construction.
Flex PVC could collapse especially due to chlorine being introduced at that area.
Flexible PVC eaten by termites - creating pin holes
Black poly pipe (sprinkler type) cracking especially at joints/connections
IS IT A LINER LEAK OR A PIPE LEAK?
We can offer some guidance in terms of Leak tests to help figure it out.

Services for Long Island Pool Leaks
Need some free advice? As the owner of a Pool Leak Detecting service, we have been helping Pool owners who have Leaks for many years. Whether you have a vinyl liner Leak and need it repaired, or whether you need a hidden pipe Leak found, we can help.
We offer guidance in determining whether a pipe pressure test or under the water inspection & subsequential repair if needed. We have decades experience and have done thousands of pools
Elasticity & a Liner's Life Span
Liners can lose their elasticity as they age and are much more prone to damage. The older the liner the more likely it is to have holes and damage that would be unrepairable due to rips, tears or cracking that can wind up being several ft. or more and can increase in size as you start to repair/patch the pool. Generally, Liners can be salvaged.
Evaporation
Is typically no more than 1/4", but usually quite a bit less. Certainly 1/2"+ is more than evaportion. A bucket test would typically not be needed at that point. What's more important is to determine whether a diver or pipe test is needed. That can usually be figured out when running the pump & calculating your water loss when the pump is operating and checking the loss with the pump off.
Dye Tests
A lot of people have heard something about dye tests. This is really not the magic bullet that people think it could be. Basically, will only use dye testing when we are within inches of a suspected Leak. We shot some dye from a syringe when we are practically on top of the Leak (say within inches). Some People have heard you can just throw some dye in the pool, and it travels to the Leak. It might eventually partially get there, but it won't be obvious.
THE BUCKET LEAK TEST: (both with the pump running and off)(only necessary when trying to gauge evaporation - if losing more than 1/2 inch you probably have a leak & would not need this test)
Fill a 5 gallon bucket to approximately 3/4 full .
Place the bucket on the first step of the pool. Make sure the water level is higher on the inside of the bucket to prevent the bucket from floating away.
Mark the bucket on both the inside and the outside of the bucket to indicate water level. Keep in mind that the test should be run in its normal cycle. If you begin the test with the pump on, you should conclude the test with the pump on. If your pump is off, leave it off for the entire test.
Fill the pool to normal level, approximately mid skimmer. Mark with a crayon or tape and check the level in 24 hours. (Again, if you begin the test with the pump on, you should check your final levels with the pump on.)
When checking the levels, if the difference on the outside is greater than the inside you have a leak.
If your Pool has been Leaking for a long time (say years) it might make sense to test the whole pool – (a dive & a pressure test).
In our opinion it is always better for the homeowner to do some tests before scheduling us for a Leak Detection. Not only could this save you money, but possibly reducing the testing we have to do, but your will probably learn more about your pool.
Generally it is a better idea to take care of the pool leaks when first noticed. Leaks generally get larger over time. If Pool leaks continue for a long time that can lead to pretty significant erosion (especially in leaks inside vinyl liners) leading to structure failure, however there usually is not a problem even if you had the leak for a while.

Does The Pool Leak When Your Equipment Is On? If you’re experiencing a pool leak only when your pool pump is on, this could be an indication of what we call a pressure-side or return leak. The pressure-side, or return, is the part of your pool plumbing that returns water from the pump to the pool under pressure created by the pump.
When the equipment is on, the entire length of plumbing from the pump to the pool is under high pressure. Any tiny crack or hole can become a significant leak. When the equipment shuts off, the pressure drops, and the leak goes away or is minimal. So if your pool only leaks when the pump is on, the leak is probably in the return section of your pool’s plumbing.
Does The Pool Leak When Your Equipment Is Off? A leak that occurs only when the pool equipment is off indicates a suction-side leak. The suction side is the length of pipe that carries water from the pool to the pump under suction from the pump - the main or skimmers. When the pump is off, the pipes leak. But when the pump is turned on, the suction from the pump creates a vacuum. If there are holes or cracks, the vacuum pulls in air and effectively stops the leak, so the leak usually disappears.
If you’re dealing with this type of leak, you’ll likely see air in your pump basket, air build-up in the filter tank, or air that has bubbled out of the return lines. When they are working correctly, your pump should only suck in water. If it is sucking in air, you may see that reflected in the pump’s pressure gauge as well.
Does The Pool Leak All the Time? A pool that leaks at all times—no matter if the equipment is on OR off—doesn’t rule out plumbing issues. But it raises the suspicion that the problem is in the pool’s shell itself, which could be holes in the vinyl or cracks in the plaster.
Our technicians would inspect your tile line for cracks first because that is a common area for cracks to appear. Next, they will check the skimmer. It is very common for a leak to occur when the plastic skimmer and concrete of the pool itself become separated, just as a matter of regular wear and tear. If we can’t find the leak that way, we may add a little dye to the pool to see if the water is flowing towards a hole or leak.
